Alcohol Free Drink Options

If you decide to go to a bar or pub without drinking you are often left facing the choice of what to drink.

You can actually plan this out in advance before you go out. Some major bar and restaurant chains actually have their menus on the websites so you can look at this before you go if you are worried about drinking options.

The key things are to choose drinks which you enjoy drinking and fit the mood or context of your situation and where you are. So, if you are going to be in one place for a long time and can choose the place maybe it is worth going somewhere where there are many options. If you will be bar-hopping then you can mix the options you choose.

So the options are:

Typical soft drinks: Coke, Pepsi, lemonades and other ‘fizzy drinks’

A couple of things to consider are:

Avoiding excess sugar.

This is a major issue if you choose Coke or orange juices and then knock back two or three during your evening out.

Avoiding excess caffeine.

In some bars and clubs you can actually have teas and coffees in place of alcohol. Whether you have this or Coke – again excess sugar is something to look out for. Having a lot of Red Bull can also be similar to the excess stimulation from caffeine.

Alcohol Free Beers and Wines

Alcohol free beer which I have spoken about before in this blog. There are more and more options depending upon where you live. You can also order cases of these beers over the internet or hopefully purchase from your local supermarket.

Just about every major beer maker has alcohol free versions from Becks Blue to San Miguel 0.0%. You can ask the bar tender about this and whether they will introduce it in the future.

Don’t worry about feeling like a fool – here in London at least, alcohol free beers have become very common and as I have said before, some bars even offer a choice of at least two alcohol free beers!

Another option is de-alcoholised mulled wine which is a great choice during winter and Christmas times.  The same goes for other wines although the options are less likely to be as widespread for now.

‘Virgin’ Cocktails

If you look at the drinks menu of many upscale bars and clubs, they will have a section on alcohol free cocktails, so-called ‘virgin’ cocktails.

You can also ask for your previous favourite alcoholic cocktail just without the cocktail.I went to one amazing bar in London and the barman spent about two or three minutes making an amazing tasting non-alcoholic cocktail.

I was sure that he had misheard me and it must have been an alcoholic cocktail but it wasn’t.

Water

This is the one which many people overlook. You can of course order sparkling or still mineral water in a bottle and pay for it.

However, there is no shame in ordering the odd glass of tap water – especially if you are feeling thirsty. In fact in London, one of the local newspapers once had a campaign to encourage people to order tap water rather than bottled water because of the environmental waste of having the bottled water.

Everyone needs 2 litres of water per day I think, so why not got at least some of your intake when you are in a bar! You will get used to peoples’ comments by saying it is inbetween your other drinks.

Mixers

You can also consider mixing drinks such as ginger beer and cranberry juice and other wonderful combinations.

So no more excuses! Please get out to your local bar – just without the alcohol!

Some great alcohol free drinks

A bit of a fun mode today.

Here are some of the non-alcoholoc drinks I have had over the years which I have enjoyed.

Pepsi RAW. This is a new type of drink – a cola without any chemicals, caffeine and the badness (apart from the sugar – which is raw cane sugar by the way).  It tastes kind of appley but is quite nice.

There is also Red Bull Cola which is also from natural ingredients. Note that that doesn’t have any Red Bull in it which cannot be too healthy.

There is also a drink called Big Tom which is basically a Virgin Mary. There are loads of cocktail options without the alcohol which can taste nice. Plus the usual juices although you do have to be careful of the sugar content.

Finally, as I have put in a previous post, there are many alcohol free beers on the market including Becks Blue, Cobra Alcohol Free, Kaliber etc. You will have to try them and see if you like them.

What are your favourite alcohol free drinks you would drink in a bar?

An Alcohol Free Life – Some of My Experiences So Far

I have not had a drink of alcohol for at least 6 years. I am definitely not trying to convert people to stop drinking if they don’t want to. It is just a choice I have made.

The first difference is control. I have so much more control over myself and my nights out. I love feeling crystal clear when both going out and in particular the next morning. Now when I talk to people and threy are drunk or getting drunk, I notice it more and also don’t want to be like that anymore.

I go out a lot, in fact more now than I did before I stopped drinking. I go to loads of bars etc and it does not bother me in anyway not to drink.

People do often ask me about this but either they get used to it or they persist and that shows more about them than me. But a lot of my friends will invite me out for a non-alcoholic beverage rather than for a beer.

After a while you get used to it. Remember, there was a period in my life when I thought I could never enjoy myself without drinking and that it would be boring without drinking. I also thought the same when I cut out sugar whilst I was doing some heavy training. I am back on sugar now though!

I go out more for either the people I am with or the event itself rather than for the comfort of drinking. And when I drink the alcohol free stuff, it feels like I am a real man anyway.

So, those are my experiences. Let me know your experiences without alcohol whether that was a day or a year or more!

Alcohol Free Drinks – Beers

If you still enjoy drinking but want to cut out the alcohol for a while, you can try alcohol free beers. There are also alcohol free wines but I will outline my experiences with alcohol free beers here.

In the early ’90s everyone thought there would be a revolution with alcohol free beers. Marketers had probably assumed there was a huge health trend plus the need for the designated driver to enjoy beer without the alcohol.

The only problem was the drinks themselves did not taste very nice. That has put peopel off from trying the recent revival.

Things are changing so much that a month or two ago in Earl’s Court, London – the Australian part of London – I went to a traditional pub which offered not one but two brands of alcohol free beers! If a pub can offer this then revolution is on its way.

Anyway, here are some of the brands I have tried. Oh yes – by alcohol free, the beer has to be less than 0.05% content.

My Favourite Beer:

Cobra Alcohol Free 0.0%

The taste of this beer is absolutely amazing. It is really sweet and delicious. Even if you don’t even want to give up alcohol, I would recommend this for the taste

Beck’s Alcohol Free 0.05%

This is quite nice. More bitter than the Cobra but has a nice kick to it

Kaliber Beer

This is also quite nice and comes in cans from the supermarkets whereas the other ones are in bottles. I can’t remember the last time I had this though because I have tended to stick to the other ones in particular Cobra
